Bolt war stark vom französischen Impressionismus und der Maltechnik alter Meister wie Rubens und Velasquez beeinflusst. Seine Ausbildung erhielt er in Kröyers Freier Kunstschule, an der Schule von Emilie Mundt, bei Marie Luplaus um 1899. Er war Schüler von Johan Rohde.
